Schaffhauser Rheinfall

I’m sure you have heard of or seen the Angel Falls in Venezuela or Niagara Falls at the US-Canadian border (you know that you always have to watch it form the Canadian side, right). But how about the Schaffhauser Rheinfalls, the largest waterfalls in Europe? As you can see from the picture on the left, these falls are close to the city. You can actually drive there with a regular bus from the Schaffhauser train station. (By the way, for the clever ones: no, Rheinfall and Reinfall are not the same words!)

We had just crossed this bridge and the water was still quite calm. But that changed quickly as you can see below. We were lucky that we visited when quite a bit of water was coming down the Rhein.

It’s not a good idea to canoe down there. However, there are boats that can approach the big rocks from below the falls and people can then climb up the rocks (on official paths with steps, that is).

We picked an optimal day: the water was quite wild and the sun shone so we got to see some quite colorful rainbows. However, it was too dangerous to check whether they are made of M&M’s here, too.

Of course, we had one of the standard great summer lunches: a Bratwurst and Bürli (bread roll). Somehow, the table wasn’t optimal for Sophia, though. But it supported her head just fine!
