Groups
The groups were computed by an AI program based on individual skills (high priority) and preferences (low priority).

Make sure you have a leader in the group who makes sure everything gets handed in, who sets up the meetings, who makes sure all the documents get prepared in time, etc. Also, find a weekly time slot that works for all group members for the rest of the semester. Consider using some on-line collaboration software.

Problems within a group need to be addressed swiftly by the group, and if it cannot be resolved, the group members are required to see me right away. If I don't hear from you, I assume you don't have any serious, project-threatening problems.

Problem Statement
The next Olympic Summer Games will be held in London in 2012. There are many people in the Olympic Village which is still to be built. The following description is taken from Wikipedia:
Olympic Village
The Olympic Village will be located in Lower Lea Valley in east London. The area is currently underdeveloped, and will thus be a well-suited place to construct the village. Because the Olympic Village will be located within the Olympic Park, about 75 percent of athletes will be within 15 minutes of their venues; this compact design, according to double Olympic decathlon gold medallist Daley Thompson, will "make [the experience] so much more inspirating [sic] and real". When the games are over, the Village will be converted into new homes and facilities for the local community.

Australian construction company Lend Lease Corp Ltd has been chosen to build the Olympic Village. The project will cost £5.3 billion ($13.2 billion)[24] and will be constructed in two phases. The first phase, which involves the development of 4,200 residential buildings and other accommodations for the village, will begin in 2008. When the 2012 Olympics are over, the second phase will involve the refurbishment of the Olympic village and construction on another 500,000 m2 of space to complete the regeneration of Stratford City.

The Olympic Village's accommodations will be the most spacious in Olympic history. Each athlete and official is guaranteed their own bed – over 17,000 beds in total. Each apartment will include internet access and wireless networking and other state-of-the-art technology.

You have been given the task to submit a proposal for an Information Kiosk for the Olympic Village. There may be one or multiple kiosks. Although you will find definitions of such kiosks. I want you to be open-minded, and if necessary, redefine the meaning of an information kiosk within reasonable limits. Keep in mind that an important tasks will be to justify that what you have designed is exactly what they need.

You won't get any more requirements from me. You need to figure them out by doing the necessary research. You will then decide which issues are the most important ones to address. (Remember the shopping cart: there it was safety, looks, shopping strategy support, getting information.)

Your task is to develop a solution including 3D model, create a brochure describing your solution, and provide a clear and convincing argument why the Olympic Committee should use your solution.

Tasks
There will be several deadlines that will be added to this page as we go.

Initial Research: Thursday, October 7
Write up in detail what you have learned while doing your initial research as discussed in class. Organize the document well. Submit the document as attachment by email with an appropriate subject line, etc.

Analysis and Criteria: Thursday, October 21
There are three things you have to do based on your initial research.
  1. Do a user analysis. Present the characteristics of your users (not stakeholders), characteristics of the context and the tasks in a condensed form, e.g., a (hierarchical) list.

  2. Develop two scenarios of the kiosk use. Select a wide sample of representative users, tasks, and contexts.

  3. List all evaluation criteria that are important. For each criteria make clear 1) why it is relevant, 2) how you intend to measure it, and 3) what appropriate values are (e.g., worst, acceptable, and others). Group the criteria if you have a few that fit into the same category.

First Prototype: Thursday, November 4
Develop a conceptual model of your new design and come up with at least three rather different alternative solutions/designs. Sketch and annotate these designs and bring them with you. As usual, we'll talk about the assignment in more detail in class.

Second Prototype: Tuesday, November 16
Your one latest and best sketched design on paper as discussed in class.
